Eid Prayer Practices and Sunnah

These recommendations are based on the practices of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions, derived from authentic Hadiths and scholarly interpretations.

  • Personal Hygiene and Appearance
    • Take a shower before going to the Eid prayer
    • Apply perfume
    • Remove armpit hair and clip nails
    • Wear the best and new clothes

  • Pre-Prayer Eating
    • Eat an odd number of dry dates (3, 5, or 7) before leaving for prayer

  • Travel to Prayer Location
    • Go to the prayer location using one route
    • Return home using a different route
  • Prayer Location
    • Preferably perform the prayer in an open area, not inside a mosque
    • If praying inside a mosque, offer two Rak’ahs as Tahiyyat-ul-Masjid (greeting the mosque)

  • Additional Prayers
    • No supererogatory prayers before or after Eid prayer
    • Optional two Rak’ahs can be performed after returning home
  • Start saying “Allahu Akbar” from sunset on the night before Eid
  • Continue until the Imam begins the prayer
  • Recommended to say: “Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar. La Ilaha Illa Allah. Wallahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Walillahi Al Hamd”
  • Inclusive Participation
    • Eid prayer is recommended for both men and women
    • Even menstruating women are encouraged to attend the gathering (though not the prayer itself)

  • Community Interaction
    • Congratulate others on Eid
    • Traditional greeting: “May Allah accept from you and from us”
